I got the ultimate high on April 20th this year. A live preview of my favorite artist Jill Scott’s fourth studio album “The Light of the Sun.” The moment meant even more since I woke up that morning not even aware she was performing. But when my sisterfriend the Single Bride spread the word of a top-secret Scott performance, the Sherlock Holmes in me was on full alert. I found a contact of a contact and sweetly RSVPed to something I hadn’t even been invited to.
I was confirmed and after tearing up my room to find something to change into, I was on my way. Outside the show I ran into my buddy Brad, a reporter at Entertainment Weekly. It was like being introduced to our future selves as we reminisced of being magazine-crazed college students at Howard.
It felt like School of C alumni meet up inside as I also saw Jozen (now blogger and editor extraordinare) and John (now Music Editor of Vibe) inside. I had a flashback to our magazine conferences.
Inside was oh so sexy with pictures of Scott from the new album, dark lighting with a red glow, and Light of the Sun cocktails all around. I headed to the front for a good viewing spot and had a mini family reunion seeing some of my former coworkers from Essence.
As Q-tip played some of our favorite classic R&B and hip-hop songs, Scott entered the stage with a big grin and her curvy backup singers, The A Group. I am so trying to be their fourth member! We were reminded why we fell so hard for Jilly from Philly as she kept it real on the ups and downs of life and love from good loving that can blind a woman and the disappointment of breakups to counting our many blessings.
She also confessed motherhood has given her freedom to say and do things on her new album that she has never done before. “Something was missing,” she said of her womanhood before having her child. Had me excited to experience motherhood one day.
Anthony Hamilton joined Jill on stage to perform their sultry new single, “So in Love,” which has been Scott’s highest debut in her career. Their performance was so very sexy!
We were surprised to hear along with Hamilton, Doug E. Fresh and Eve; rappers Too Short and Paul Wall are featured on the album.
“This album is me. My grand-baby,” Jill said. She thanked fans for their support of her first baby, the debut double-platinum album “Who is Jill Scott?” Eleven years later we are still discovering new answers.
“The Light of the Sun” hits stores June 28.
